Mental Health Awareness week is back with the focus on anxiety and how it can have an impact on our mental health.
Mental Health Awareness week takes place every year and brings an opportunity for everyone around the world to come together with a focus on improving their mental health for the better.
This year, the theme is anxiety, and how it affects our mental health and wellbeing. Focussing on anxiety during this week provides us all with an opportunity to understand how anxiety can affect our mental health, and how we can cope with and heal from anxiety.
Anxiety is the feeling of being worried or anxious, which can affect us both physically and mentally. Lots of things can lead to us feeling anxious, from stress at work to finances, feeling anxious is a common feeling which affects us all. In the UK, over 8 million people are affected by anxiety, which is just over 1 in 10 of us.
It is normal to feel some level of anxiety during stressful times, however, anxiety can become an issue when it starts to impact your mood and everyday life. Although, with the right support and coping strategies, anxiety can be made to be more manageable.
When you are feeling stressed and anxious, take time to concentrate and focus on your breathing. This will allow you to have full control over your thoughts, enabling you to relax.
Exercise can be a great way of distracting yourself from any anxious thoughts. From going on a walk, to attending a fitness class, there are so many choices to choose from that can help you to relax and take your mind off something.
Anxiety can be a very lonely feeling, therefore, spending time and communicating with others is a great opportunity for you to discuss how you are really feeling. There is always someone who you can talk to who can help you overcome any worries you may have.
Getting a good’s night sleep can be difficult when you have a head full of worries, but getting rest gives you energy to cope with difficult thoughts and feelings, which can help you to overcome any stress that you may be feeling.
Eating regularly, as part of a balanced diet, will keep your blood sugar levels stable which can make a difference to your overall mood and energy levels.
