Job description

Job purpose:

  • To assess and actively manage a caseload of housing applications from applicants who are high need with particular requirements due to their overcrowding, under-occupation, vulnerability, health, age or other needs.
  • Develop individual re-housing strategies to maximise the service provided to these applicants, liaising closely with advocates and other professionals providing support to them.
  • Carrying out home visits to fully assess circumstances and to offer the best possible housing options advice and information on rehousing prospects.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing applicants with targeted advice on the Council’s lettings scheme and procedure in order to maximise their sustainable housing options, and rehousing prospects.
  • Providing applicants with help and support in terms of their housing applications, and encourage them to make informed and pragmatic decisions about all of the housing options available to them.
  • Assessing the more complex and difficult cases to maximise rehousing prospects. This will include liaising with a range of other professionals to ensure all relevant information is collated.
  • Carrying out assessments, including home visits, for applicants for older persons and sheltered accommodation.
  • Identifying the need for medical information to support applications for medical priority.
  • Working with applicants to produce individual re-housing plans that maximise the opportunity to improve the quality of life for applicants with complex housing needs.
  • Working closely with applicants to provide the right information, in a timely fashion.
  • Preparing cases for medical assessment, and advising applicants of the outcomes of the medical assessment.

Requirements:

  • Knowledge of the legislative and policy framework within the lettings service, including Part VI Housing Act 1996 as amended.
  • Knowledge of Housing Options.
  • A demonstrably high level of analytical, verbal and numeric reasoning skills.
  • Experience of engaging with colleagues, members of the public, partner agencies and stakeholders.
  • Experience of complex casework, working with vulnerable households and caseload management.
  • Experience of working in an allocations/lettings service including knowledge of current legislation and best practice and housing options.
  • Ability to bring about positive change through both supporting and challenging  individuals and families towards agreed goals and outcomes.
