Senior Support Worker

Job description

This is a pivotal role within the team, combining hands-on support with leadership responsibilities to ensure consistent, high-quality care and a safe, nurturing environment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead by example as the designated Shift Leader, promoting consistency and best practice across all aspects of care.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with young people through daily routines, offering emotional support and promoting healthy attachments.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior staff, supporting their development and ensuring high standards of practice.
  • Respond calmly and appropriately to challenging behaviour using a trauma-informed, child-centred approach.
  • Collaborate with professionals including social workers, healthcare providers, and educators to support each child’s holistic development.
  • Keep clear and detailed records, including daily logs, incident reports, and care plans, in line with safeguarding and regulatory standards.
  • Contribute to care planning and help facilitate transitions in and out of the home.
  • Take part in the on-call rota, offering advice or in-person support when required.
  • Support day-to-day running of the home through domestic tasks and meal preparation, ensuring a clean, safe, and homely environment.
  • Champion education and enrichment, helping children to access learning opportunities and engage in meaningful activities.

What We’re Looking For

  • Proven experience supporting children or young people in a residential care setting.
  • Confident in leading shifts and making decisions in a fast-paced, emotionally demanding environment.
  • A strong understanding of safeguarding, child development, and trauma-informed practice.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to work flexibly, including weekends, evenings, and bank holidays.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and reflective practice.
